Don’t Be Intimidated by All of the Different GPS Systems on the Market
There can never be too much of a good thing, right? Wrong! Sometimes there can be too much of a good thing if you don’t know how to sort through all of the good things to find the one good thing for you (try to say THAT three times in a row). My point is, if you’re trying to find a tracking, navigation or mapping device that suits your needs, you may have a hard time doing so if there are too many to have to work your way through. In this article, my intention is to work backwards in helping you to decide what you want. Instead of giving you a list of different GPS systems, I’m going to list activities and needs, then help you find the devices that might suit those needs so that shuffling through the dozens on the market won’t be a nightmare for you.
Cars
First we’ll look at the different GPS systems on the market that cater to cars since they are typically what people want the devices for. Car devices come in typically three categories: mapping, tracking, and navigation.
Mapping – A mapping device is one that shows you a 2D or 3D picture of a map and allows you to determine where you are on the map, as well as the directions you will need to travel between your starting point and destination. Many mapping devices come with additional features, such as automatic reroutes, traffic and weather updates, and even games and entertainment options to keep you busy while traveling. But the one feature these have that the next type has is navigation. Some device that will suit you with this feature include the TomTom GO 720 and TomTom One.
Navigation – Different GPS systems for navigation were created to help people get more specific instruction when traveling between locations. In addition to mapping features, navigation devices give turn-by-turn directions, text-to-speech capabilities, and 2D and 3D maps that ensure you won’t get lost, no matter where you are in the country (and sometimes beyond). Some devices on the market that can suit your needs are Garmin Nuvi 660 and Magellan Roadmate 2000.
Tracking – A tracking device is slightly different than the mapping and navigation devices. While a tracking unit might have some of the same features, its overall purpose is to keep track of your car. For this unit, you must plant a device in your car and then have a corresponding unit in your home or on your person through which you can keep track of where your car is traveling at all times.
Pets
Believe it or not, there are different GPS systems on the market that can help you keep up with your dog. One device that does a great job is the Garmin Astro. It not only tells you where your dog is located on a map, but it also lets you know what activity your pet is taking part in.
Computers
There are devices on the market that help you keep track of your computer. In particular, Computrace is highly revered as a company that does a great job of keeping an eye on your PC or laptop when you’re away. This is especially convenient for students in college who have a roommate and are unsure of what that roommate is doing while you’re in class. Computrace will keep track of all logins and places visited on the computer at what times. And if your system comes up missing, it can track exactly where it has gone via an online system accessible anywhere an Internet connection is found.
Golf
Believe it or not, there are different GPS systems on the market that are dedicated to golfing. They help you navigate your way through a golf course and calculate the distance between the tee and pin. With one of these devices, like the GPS Golf Pro, a popular unit, you know exactly where you are located in relation to other parts of the course – including greens, water hazards, and hidden bunkers.
By determining what you need in a device and how you intend to use it, you will be able to decipher more easily between the different GPS systems available to you. All of the confusing terminology used to describe each device can quickly become overwhelming, which is why it is better to use layman’s terms to differentiate. Then once you determine why you intend to use your device, you can decide which of the diffrent GPS systems on the market will work best for you.
