This combines the best of both worlds as sometimes a VHF radio comes in very handy for different situations that you could run into. The one thing though that seems to happen when you lump more than one thing together performance suffers. A VHF radio has many uses and if you are on the water it is a must as the coast guard monitors it 24 hours a day. This means if you are ever in trouble you can contact them and they will be there to help you. The Uniden Mystic comes in a two-tine black and grey housing and consists of high impact plastic. This means that this model will be very durable and can take the punishment that you may dish out to it. It measures 6.8 by 2.8 by 1.5 inches and it weighs close to one pound. It can be worn on a belt clip as well and it comes with a removable 6.25-inch rubber antenna as well. This model comes with a monochrome display, which many models such as these do. Yu have 12 evenly spaced VHF and GPS function buttons that make operation of the unit fairly easy. It is also waterproof and it can take being underwater up to 30 minutes in one meter of water. It is good to know that, but for most people they will never have to worry about that.

The VHF radio has all the features you would expect from a model of this type. It includes triple-watch channel scanning, one touch connection to the emergency channels and access to all U.S, International, and Canadian marine channels, which is something I really like on this model. The Mystic supports DSC, which is digital selective calling which allows you instantly to send a distress signal. You will also be able to receive distress signals from other boaters and you will have the ability to place private ship-to-ship calls. The VHF radio part of this unit works very well and should give you no problems at all.

If you think that this model is just all about the VHF radio you will be very surprised as the GPS receiver is very good on this model as well. The Mystic GPS part of the unit comes with 32MB of internal memory for storing street maps and storage of up to 500 waypoints and icons as well. One of my favorite tests I like giving models is to see how well they perform on locking in on satellites and this one usually did it in 30 seconds or less. This is something that I really did not expect from this model, but I will take that any day. The GPS features work very well on this model and the directions they gave me were very accurate as well. The Mystic battery life is around 10 hours, but it can last up to 20 hours if you limit the use of the backlighting. It seems that backlighting always takes more juice to run than anything else.

Overall, I was very impressed with the Uniden Mystic and all it could do. If you’re the kind of person who does a lot of traveling on land and in the sea than this is something you should consider. The VHF radio part of this model is very good and the GPS functions work just as well. If you want the combination of both of these products than look no, further than this model. It has it all and it will get the job done for you no matter where you happen to be. The performance of this model was one of the best I have seen in a very long time. Many times when you add more items to a product it suffers, but this is one model that does not have that problem at all. Grab one of these and you will definitely see what I am talking about.
