Never Leave Home Without Your GPS Again If You Ride ATV's

Years ago, map reading was something we enjoyed in school. Looking to find the points of interest on a map was exciting as a young lad, but that has now been replaced with GPS systems and other portable navigation systems. Right now, we are at the crossroads of this technology and as it becomes more widely accepted more people want to find out even more about it. Most people associate this new way of map reading just with a car, hiking, or just jogging, but if the truth was known, it has many applications that go much deeper than that. Most people do not realize all the uses that this technology really has. One such is the use of it on ATV's or all-terrain vehicles, as they are known by the masses. More and more people ride ATV's than ever before and are a perfect use for this type of unit. Read further to discover even more on how it can benefit you the rider.

So how does these small powerhouse little gizmos do it you wonder. It really is simple actually, as 31 satellites are down above the earth circling it and these electronic devices get a fixed on them to pinpoint your exact location. Most of the units will only use four of these satellites, as that is all is needed to get a fix on your location. For our purpose, finding a great off-road GPS unit is not as hard as it may seem. There are literally dozens of different ones on the market today, but we must know exactly what we will need for the applications that we will be using it and that are off-road use.

Channels are one of the things that we will be looking for. When we are ready to make a purchase, we will have to decide between parallel channel and multiplexing. The most basic of the receivers today will support around eight parallel channels. What this means exactly are you will be able to scan eight satellites that are in the air to determine exactly where you are at. Of course, the more channels you have the better off you are right now the best models will scan around 16 channels. Multiplexing is a little different in the sense that you can switch satellites that you are tracking very quickly. The biggest drawback though to this system is they are not as accurate as the parallel type model.

Let’s face if everyone who rides ATV's will sometime during the course of riding run into water somewhere and this is why get a waterproof model is very crucial to your success with a GPS model. Most models are water resistant and very few models are actually waterproof so you may have to look long and hard to find a waterproof model, but it is worth the look and added expense. One other thing a waterproof model will give you is more rugged use. The bouncing and punishment an ATV takes is a lot and you will need your receiver to be just as tough so look for that also.

Battery life is something that you will also need to look at very carefully especially if you are on the trails for a very long time or in a remote area. Many of today's top receivers have an optional battery back that will take alkaline batteries and is something that you will want to consider. Many times, you should get into the habit of carrying extra batteries with you just in case of an emergency. Today's top models have voice navigation abilities, which is something that you should not consider. Many times riders where ATV helmets and it is sometimes hard to hear voices with the engine running and all the noise around you. The added expense is not worth it.

Two great suggestions for ATV riders would be the Garmin Rhino 530 and the Garmin GPSMAP60csx as both will do a very good job for ATV riders. Most people will tell you these models have everything you need on them to and will give you all the information you will ever need. Riding an all-terrain vehicle is a lot of fun, but sometimes you can get lost and really have no idea on how to get back home. With the GPS technology we have today that should no longer be an issue and you can now concentrate more on riding and having fun on the trails without having to worried about getting lost again.
