GPS Buying Guide Tips

One of the toughest thing consumers have these days is buying and finding a GPS or navigational system device that they can decide on. There are many different reasons for that and we are going to look at that and give you some tips to help make your purchase much more error free than ever before. First, we need to know a little about GPS for we can move forward with finding the unit that will work best for us.

GPS stands for Global Positioning System, was originally designed for military purposes, and was used by them for many years before it was introduced to the public. This technology uses satellites to follow movements and can track your locations. The biggest advantage is this system is very accurate and used by almost everyone today. Some of the names that you will run into will be Garmin, TomTom, Magellan, Cobra are just some of them that you may run into during the purchase process. One of the first things you must decide which type of system you are going to purchase. There are many different types and each one have their own purpose.

Automobile GPS units are the most popular type as people are always in there vehicles these days. Others that you may run into are marine and portable. Most people though will buy either an in-dash GPS system or a portable one. Yes, marine GPS systems are sold every day, but for most, the automobile and portable models are the ones that will be purchased. Portable handhelds have in recent years been growing in popularity and may have over taken the in-dash for vehicles for a number of reasons. Theft is a big issue with in-dash models as no one wants to come to their car to see the dash tore up and there GPS unit gone so one way to stop that is through a portable model.

One of the biggest misconceptions is a portable GPS system cannot do what in-dash models can. This is false and in fact, most portables can do anything you ask of them anymore. One of the hardest things that you will have to decide is what model to buy. GPS models come in all shapes and sizes and prices so knowing exactly what you need are vital when you are ready to make your first purchase. Most people actually buy more of a system than they really will ever use. If you do not travel a lot then a model that costs less and has fewer options is something that you will want to consider. Now if you do travel a lot and basically are in your vehicle many hours than you will want to get many options on your model purchase.

Now there are certain things that you do want to make sure your GPS system has when you purchase no matter how often you use it. Maybe one of the most important items that you will want to have on any model is text to speech function. This feature will keep your eyes on the road, as a voice will tell you what turn to make or where you should be headed. That way you are always looking at the road and your concentration level is much higher. Another option that you will want it to have is the ability to save your destinations. Depending on the model that you purchase the amount that you can save could be limited. Bluetooth technology is something that many of these models now are becoming compatible with. If you have a Bluetooth phone than you may want to consider that when purchasing your model.

Other tips are stay with brand name models as they usually will be your best options. Most people will read a good review and think that this or that model is the perfect one for them. Do not believe everything so this is why staying with a brand name model is best. Shop around for price as if you look around you may be able to get a much lower price than you could at your local electronics store.

A quick overview shows us we first must know exactly the type we are looking for portable or an in-dash car model. The second thing is we must get the options we are going to use. Extra options will just cost us extra and if we do not use them what good are they really. Third it is always a good idea to stick with the brand names as they will back there products and we know what were getting. Last, but sure not least shop around for the best available price.
