GPS tracking devices have been in use since the 1960s when the U.S. Navy had tested and then implemented the first GPS system. After the information reaches the monitoring station it transmits the data to commercial GPS coverage providers who then sends this information over the internet to the end user.

Passive tracking devices are used for monitoring people or vehicles. This particular type of GPS tracking technology is best used for keeping track of a person’s movements without receiving constant updates on their location. The device works by sending a signal to the GPS satellite system which sends back positional information to the device. Once this information is recorded onto the passive device a person can download the data onto a computer

Satellite tracking is another type of GPS technology option that is used for devices. This type of coverage works by being directly linked into the GPS satellite system. A website is also required for satellite service since information is constantly updated for a subscriber. This type of coverage is also offered nationwide as opposed to a limited area.

In 2005 the government made a law that all cell phones must have the ability to be tracked within 100 meters and as a result E911 is an automatic feature that is a part of mobile device technology. This is necessary for locating lost and stranded drivers who might be seriously injured. Various emergency medical services and rescue organizations also use this technology to help track lost, injured or stranded people and workers. Some GPS devices have also been designed to with solar capabilities which allow them more operational time. Auto manufacturers are now making this technology a common feature on most modern vehicles.

GPS devices are also used for commercial transportation activity and the trucking industry is one major area where this type of technology is constantly being used to keep track of shipments and drivers. People also used handheld GPS tracking devices to find a certain location within their city or the right direction if they’re traveling on the highway. GPS tracking devices have helped people to find their way when they’re lost and it has helped to save lives by allowing people people to be tracked, located and removed from danger at a quicker rate.
